The Technicolor Odyssey of the Human Experience

Project type

Audiovisual Installation

Date

May 2023

Role

Collaborator with Murad Aliyev

The Technicolor Odyssey of the Human Experience is an organised chaos of visual instances that have impacted the both of us — exploring the common grounds and differences between us, we oscillate between introspection, comedy, satire and beauty.
The installation will consist of a projection in a dark room, where the senses of the audience will be isolated and controlled by the work.
To make it accessible, the work can be accessed through a VR headset, emphasising the immersive aspect of the project.
By controlling the images and audio, we can control the mood of the audience through the senses.
Using found footage (space and time reality) from different time periods and geographical areas, and manipulating them through collage, we distort the orientation of the viewer and take the audience on a trip, filled with unexpected twists and turns.
Starting with the editing of the sound piece, we were guided by the pace and energy we created through this sense to curate and edit the visual aspect of it.
By slowing down and speeding up videos, we distort passage of time through the different paces.
Through these manipulations, we want to convey how the perception of space and time is distorted, experienced in many instances of the human experience, whether it be in regards to anxiety, overstimulation, substance use, etc. The audience is invited to stray away from our instinct to constantly make sense of everything surrounding us. We invite you to experience the installation with no prior knowledge and expectations.
By working together, we managed to channel a very dynamic and productive flow, constantly adding on and developing each other’s ideas and inputs. It was very interesting working with the distortion of emotions of the audience, and we managed to do that with lots of communication, brain storming, and experimenting, condensing and editing around 5 hours of footage into a 7-min piece. We found the final product to be very gratifying as it truly reflects our personal and shared visual and artistic culture.
