A Little Piece of Home (Wherever You Go) | Space within a Space

Date

March 2023

Project type

Laser-cut Mockup

We want to create an intimate space, that would be universal and relatable for everyone: a childhood room. Even though we come from different backgrounds, there are plenty of recurring elements that we all remember having in our respective childhood rooms.

Additionally, the space would be mobile: the diorama will be placed inside a hand luggage, representing the importance of childhood memories as they play a huge part in who we are today as they shaped us and follow us wherever we go. Even though we do not live in our childhood rooms anymore, they will always live within us. The luggage echoes the notion of traveling and moving around, making the third and final space be open to interpretation and unique to each individual.

Bringing together our work is a sound piece that narrates different stories of strangers. We created the piece through a questionnaire where people anonymously could write their memories lived in their childhood rooms. Our work brings together us but also aims to reach the public in a common space.

We decided to elevate our project in the following ways: we switched from the initial material (playdoh) to paper origami for the interior, representing the naive side and fragility of childhood, how it is built in simple yet intricate ways and echoing the fact that each fold in our stories make a lifelong impact. We edited the audio piece to make it clearer and played in in headphones, so the listener can delve into the past lives of strangers, finding themselves in these stories while seeing them come to life with the elements included in the space (wolf by the window, umbrella in the corner, monster under the bed, etc.). We changed the dimensions of the model and redid it so that it fits so perfectly in the luggage that one could also close it, pushing the notion of mobility even further. Finally, after 3D scanning the space so that one can even carry it digitally, we came up with digital mockups of the luggage within various places, translating visually this idea of taking a little piece of home wherever you go.
